Major contract for Eisenmann – sustainable, flexible technology makes truck paint shop fit for the future

Böblingen, Germany, December 7, 2018 – Plant engineering specialist Eisenmann, based in southern Germany, is to provide a one-stop solution for the paint shop expansion of one of the world’s largest makers of trucks at its production facility in the east of the United States. This is a substantial contract, and comprises a new pretreatment line, including a new building, plus the expansion of the existing paint shop. Preparations are already well under way, as modification work is slated to commence during the Christmas break and to be completed, including construction work, in the summer of 2020.

As Timo Steimer, Head of Automotive System Sales, NAFTA, at Eisenmann explains, “Above all, our customer was very impressed by our leading-edge technology. But our sales team’s responsiveness and flexibility throughout the bidding phase were also key factors in this outstanding achievement.” Pretreatment and e-coating will be housed in a new building, and will feature the Eisenmann E-Shuttle 200. This compact, cost-saving system is especially suited to high throughput, and supports the flexible treatment of multiple vehicle models on one and the same production line. Eisenmann will also be supplying the dryers for this process step.

Steimer elaborates, “In addition to the new pretreatment and e-coating equipment, we will be making modifications to the existing paint shop, allowing the customer to raise annual capacity from 40,000 to 77,000 painted trucks.” This will include a new paint booth featuring Eisenmann’s unique E-Cube overspray removal technology. The modular design of this energy-saving, easy-to-operate filtration system makes it ideal for legacy environments (brownfield projects). The scope of supply extends to conveyors for the dryers, a new paint mixing room, two exhaust air purification units and the modular Smart Clean system – marking its first-ever deployment on the US market. This removes dust and dirt particles from the vehicle bodies prior to painting. The automatic adjustment of the curvature of the roller ensures a thorough, rapid and highly efficient cleaning process – even at critical points, such as folds and recessed grips. Smart Clean interoperates seamlessly with practically all robot models, and is therefore also highly suitable as a retrofit.

“This project demonstrates that an existing paint shop can be upgraded quickly and efficiently by means of skillful modifications applied to the right places, making it more flexible and resource-friendly,” emphasizes Steimer. “We have a rich variety of products within our portfolio that are perfect for applications such as this one. The future belongs to flexible, smart and highly-efficient automotive paint shops, and a complete new-build is frequently not possible or not wanted by the customer.”
